Shravanbelagola

Around some 90km from Hassan, on the road which leads to it from Bangalore, a detour will appear for Shravanbelagola , a huge statue of Mahavir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahaveer).

The statue is on a small hill and the walk from the below to the statue is along a very steep slope, on steps. The walk up and down can take almost 20 or so minutes each. The view of the area below is nice too.

You'll be in awe when you see the size of the statue. On the way, there are also inscriptions (covered in glass) which date from earlier than the 17th century or so.

Near the statue, there is a small room with small statues of all the Tirthankaras (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tirthankara).
